Electronic Chip Tags for Offshore Drilling Pipes - Completed
Goal
To develop electronic chips for drilling pipes, so called RF/ID tags, which should be able to handle long term mechanical stress under the high pressure and temperature drilling conditions of the North Sea operations.
Description
Participants: A North Sea Rig operator, Laybourn Trading & Technology and Offshore Center Danmark.
The development, casting, positioning and installation and site testing of drilling pipe electronic chips on drilling pipes with the consideration of the design specifications of pressure > 500 Bar, temperature => 178 C degrees, and stress effects within their operational lifetime. The project is in close collaboration with the company L.T.&T., OCD and one of the rig operators in the Danish North Sea sector.
Mile Stones
1. 9 chips will be tested within a 3 week period. 2. 3 chips situated on 30 drilling pipes (a total of 90 chips) will be tested over a 3 month period. 3. Pending positive results of the former experiments, a further 300 drilling pipes will be tested over a 3 month period. 4. Pending positive results of all experiments, it will be ascertained whether further tests are required.
Results
Following testing, the result is drilling pipe chips which can withstand mechanical stress over a long period of time. A commercialization process has now been initiated outside the scope of development project.
