Decommissioning of Offshore Installations - Commercialization -Completed
Goal
There is today about 600 platforms in the North Sea. All who are interested in the issue of decommissioning of oil platforms remember the incident of Brent Spar and the resultant controversy and discussion concerning the environmental impact which such a project may lead to. The decommissioned oil platforms pose a potential pollution problem for the world's oceans and particularly in this case, for the North Sea. At a meeting in July of 1998 in Sintra, it was agreed by the Norwegian and EU countries environment ministers, that all oil and gas installations in EU and Norwegian waters should be dismantled completely, after they have outlived their use, in an environnmentally responsible fashion. A complete removal of the installations, with existing technology, is however quite expensive, and it is therefore imperative that new and more cost effective methods for dismantling of these installions are considered through analysis and research. The results of the project will be presented to all the interested parties in an open seminar sponsored by OCD, AUE, and Rambøll. Furthermore AUE will be able to use the results of the project in developing courses for personnel involved in the decommissioning of oil and gas installations.
