ATEX-Directives
In co-operation with Rambøll Offshore Center Danmark offers a course containing the ATEX-directives.
Background
ATEX consists of 2 EU-directives in relation to explosion protection of equipment, installations – and protection of personnel – in case of atmospheres involving explosion risks. The atmospheres involving explosion risks can occur as a result of dust, steam or gases.
The directives are of importance to e.g. the off- and onshore oil/gas industry, grain and food stuff companies, wood industry, pharmaceutical and chemical installations, treatment plants and biogas plants – even certain parts of the food industry (e.g. where the process comprises spray drying).
Directive 94/9/EF (ATEX 100a) deals with the demands for approval and CE marking of electrical and non-electrical equipment for areas involving explosion risks. The directive took effect from 30th June 2003. However, there are still problems with equipment produced before this date – equipment which is often found in different stocks. Especially mechanical equipment and other non-electrical equipment cause problems.
Directive 1999/92/EF (ATEX 137) deals with the safety of employees and comprises among other things the area classifications (zones), equipment demands to the zones and common conditions for working in areas involving explosion risks, e.g. “hot work”. The directive stipulates that before 1st July 2006 an explosion protection document for existing installations with atmospheres involving explosion risks has to be prepared.
Directive 1999/92/EF does not comprise offshore installations, for which national regulations are valid (see the guidelines from the Danish Energy Authority).
This course gives an overview of the directives, the affiliated regulations and the specifications/instructions. Furthermore the standards will be explained in a simple way.
About the course teacher
For more than 20 years Rambøll has projected plants and installations in areas involving explosion risks, e.g. within the offshore oil/gas industry, refineries and in connection with pharmaceutical plants. For many years Rambøll has worked with risk analysis of such plants, and the company has worked with installation, running and maintenance of such installations.
Since 2001/2002 Rambøll has implemented the standards of the ATEX directives in many of the projects. Rambøll has in this way obtained very good experience with the directives 94/9 and 1999/92, which have been in effect since 30th June 2003 and implemented into Danish legislation.
Rambøll has experience with electrical as well as non-electrical installations in gas and dust classified areas.
